Because we had large numbers, the session was run in two overlapping sections.
The forwards arrived first and worked from 4.30pm to 5.45pm, with the backs working from 5.15pm to 6.30pm. This overlap allowed much more senior coach time with the players, before the assistant coaches supported the forwards coach and the backs coach.
We are going to look at the forwards part of the session in detail. It was split into the following four sections (letters refer to image):
A - Opening game: Runs for about 10-15 minutes, starting just before the actual start time to encourage players to be ready quickly.
B - Team technical session: Split into two groups. Runs for about 30 minutes, with two 10-minute technical sessions, returning to the touch game in between.
C - Unit skills: Split in two, with a focus on scrum profile and lifting. This part runs for about half an hour.
D - Game to finish: A full-contact game, building up the intensity.
