Practise exit strategies from your 22m area. You may need to form a couple of rucks to ‘flatten’ the defence before your kickers are in position to clear the ball.
Flattening the defence means bringing more defenders into the line to stop the next attack, creating gaps in the backfield.
A 20m box, split down the middle.
ACTIVITY: Six attackers start on one side of the box, facing four defenders. Put another defender in the other part of the box. The attack aims to make ‘secure’ progress down this first side of the box – so, no offloading. When there is a ruck, they have to move the ball into the other box and do the same. If they win quick ball, the player at the back kicks the ball out of the front of the box. If not, the attack has one more chance to achieve quick ball by attacking to the first box again.
GAME SITUATION: Set up nine attackers and six defenders, as in the bottom illustration. Two ruck pads represent an ‘old ruck’, with a ball on the ground just in front of the attackers. The attack has three phases to clear the ball out of the box, but only up the field or into touch on the side where the 5m channel is. They are allowed one pass from the base of each ruck. Rotate three players after every three attempts.
