Put your players into more game-realistic scenarios so they can thoroughly test their skills – it is also a really good test for the defenders.
By shifting the defenders’ starting points, and making the attack line up depending on where the defender goes, the 2v1 becomes more game-like. The defender can also decide whether to rush up or hold their ground to force other decisions.
A 15m x 10m box, a ball, corner flag (optional), coloured cones.
Activity: A feeder (F) starts to the middle of one side of the box, with two attackers (A1 and A2) on one corner and a defender (D) on the other. The flag indicates the corner of the try line and touchline. The three cones are where D will run to (see top illustration). Call out which cone D runs to. The attackers line up depending on where D is (see middle illustration). Once aligned, F passes to A1. Depending on what D does, A1 runs and passes to A2. Use touch tackling (see bottom illustration). Repeat several times, then change which side the pass comes from.
The feeder passes to the first attacker, who draws the defender and passes (or dummy passes or switches)
