Push the ball carrier to change their running angles and encourage support runners to react so defences are not faced with easy patterns to defend.
Works on ‘off-the-cuff’ movements of players, so tests their recognition of space and reactions to their team-mates.
Five 3m channels, balls.
ACTIVITY: Put three attackers in three out of the five channels. A feeder passes the ball to one of the attackers, who must run into a new channel and pass to a player who is running into a new channel. The players should aim to complete at least two passes at pace. Any extra passes are a bonus.
DEVELOPMENTS: Put two defenders in two channels about 10m away from the attackers. As soon as the ball is passed in, they run forward up their channels to intercept or disrupt the pass or passers. Use touch or full tackling, with offloads. Then repeat, but start attackers facing the wrong way.
GAME SITUATION: Set up five players in the channels, though at least two can start in the channel of another player. Put two defenders about 10m away from the attacking line. They can move into any channel. The ball is passed into the attackers. The ball carrier has to pass immediately or run into another channel and then pass. Use touch tackling.
