In this activity and game, the second player in support of the ball carrier needs to work out how to support the tackle contest.
Explores a range of situations to react to, but with the key idea that the team needs to create ‘go forward’ if possible.
Cones, balls and a 7m wide, 15m long box. Use a 20m box for the game.
ACTIVITY: Three attackers and three defenders line up as in the top illustration. Make an attacker run through and be tackled by a defender. They offload, if they can, to the first support player. The defender directly behind the tackle waits inside their box before tackling the support runner, if they can. The defender facing the second support runner runs behind the box and into the channel to defend. The second support runner helps the first as they aim to score at the far end of the channel. Use scrag or full tackling.
GAME: Split into teams of four and put two teams in the 20m box. Allocate a try line to each team. Pass the ball to one player. All other players must drop, touching their chest on the ground, and then get up. The ball carrier can go forward immediately. Play full tackling. The team in possession has 10 seconds to score a try.
