Make sure your players focus on their jobs. They must know what to do once the set piece has finished or a ruck has been won or lost.

ACTIVITY: Set up three ‘rucks’ with cones, with a ball at the back of each, as in the top illustration. Split players into groups of six or seven. Get them to run to the first ruck, with a couple of players rucking over the ball and then passing it out. They then move to the next ruck and do the same thing. Ask them to consider who should be rucking and who should be passing. Count down the release of the ball from each ruck to help them find their positions.
GAME SITUATION: Split into attack and defence, of at least seven-a-side. Put five players from each team in the smaller box. Throw the ball to one team; they have to get to the other end of the box. If they are stopped by a ruck, they have to pass the ball out into the larger box. Play full contact and stop on infringements.
