This energetic game uses different scoring zones to work on players’ ability to scan and pass the ball into space. The position of the high-reward zones in the centre of the pitch adds in a high-risk challenge. By Jonny Wheeler, head of rugby at Pocklington School
Using half the pitch, make 9 circles on the ground with cones, 7 yellow, 1 red and 1 blue. Can use hula hoops instead.
This is good game for getting players looking and moving the ball to space. It enables players to explore intercepts and getting the ball back.
I’ve also changed what ball is used, such as a tennis ball or football, to work on different passes.
Having the low-scoring hoops around the edges makes it easier to score but means that players have to identify space and move the ball effectively. Having high value or reset score hoops are harder to score in but reward good decision making. If player numbers are small you can change the size of the pitch.
