Push the ball carrier to change his angle of running and your support runners to react so defences are not faced with easy patterns to defend. This session works on “off-the-cuff” movements of players, so tests their recognition of space and reactions to their own team mates.

What to think about
This is a great session for forwards and backs. Players will find themselves tangling their running lines initially, but you find great results with patience.
The session improves areas of the game that will add to your offloading prowess because players will find themselves running better support lines.
Encourage flick passes, switches and blind passes as players get used to running into spare channels.
set-up
- Keep changing angles when you are on the ball.
- Stay deep off the ball and react to where the ball carrier is running.
What you get your players to do
Put three attackers in three of five 20m channels (see picture 1). Instruct a feeder to pass the ball to one of the attackers. That attacker must run into a new channel and pass the ball to a player who is running into a new channel (see picture 2).
The players should aim to complete at least two passes at pace. Any extra passes are a bonus (see picture 3).
The ball is fed to a carrier while support players change channels.
Development
Put two defenders in two channels about 10m away from the attackers. As soon as the ball is passed in, they run forward up their channels, to intercept or disrupt the pass or passers. Use touch or full tackling – with offloads.
Repeat, but start the attackers facing the wrong way.
The ball carrier passes to another player while he switches channels. The new ball carrier also switches channels as does the other support player.
Game situation
Set up five or six players in the channels - at least two players can start in the same channel. Put two defenders about 10m away from the attacking line. They can move into any channel. The ball is passed to the attackers. The ball carrier has to pass immediately or run into another channel and then pass.
Use touch tackling. Add defenders and reduce the distance they start from the attack.
The new ball carrier passes to another player who is running into another channel.
What to call out
- “Ball in both hands to keep the options open”
- “Pass for the player not to the player”
- “Lots of purposeful communication”
