Develop better handling skills by forcing players to use the ball with one hand in and around the contact area. This session picks out some one-handed contact situations for players to look at solutions. A tougher session for players with smaller hands.

What to think about
Don’t be too tough on handling errors, looking for a lower success ratio than you might expect under normal circumstances.
Challenge better players by making them use the least sticky balls. An over-pumped smooth ball frustrates good ball handlers.
Passing is not just about the hands. The player needs to use good footwork to position himself to release the ball in the most effective manner – especially by turning his shoulder.
set-up
- Keep the ball secure in contact and only pass when you are sure you can release the ball to support.
- Use the hand and the inside of your arm to cradle the ball and then pass it towards the supporting player.
What you get your players to do
Put a ball carrier in the middle of a 5m x 3m box, with his arm outstretched and hand on the chest of a defender. Put a support player outside the box. When you shout “GO” the defender attempts to pull the attacking player to ground, while the attacker aims to release the ball to his supporting player (see picture 1).
A ball carrier holding a defender at arm’s distance. When you shout “GO” , the defender tries to put the ball carrier on the ground, before he pops the ball to a supporting player aiming to score on the far side of the box.
Development
In a 10m x 5m box ball a carrier runs down the 2m corridor towards the defender.
As the defender tackles him, he releases the ball to a supporting player who can run into the channels either side of the corridor (see picture 2).
A ball carrier runs down the narrow corridor. When he is tackled, he passes into either channel one-handed to the support player.
Game situation
In a 10m x 5m box, three attackers run towards a defender who covers the first half and another defender who covers the second half.
The attacking players can use two-handed or one-handed passes but score double points for each successful onehanded pass out of contact. One point for each box completed with no mistakes (see picture 3).
Three attackers aim to score at the far end, scoring double points for each onehanded pass used in contact.
What to call out
- “Cup the ball between hand and arm”
- “Spread fingers and thumb across the ball”
