Players initially work on their passing accuracy and then go straight into a 2v1. The quick change from technique to decision making encourages players to work hard at executing skills.

What to think about
All players should be able to pass the ball accurately over 3m from both sides. This exercise pushes them a little further, with accurate passes required over 5m and on the run.
To start with, players should walk/jog through to make sure they complete the first passing stage. But when it comes to the 2v1, this must always be completed at full pace.
set-up
- Run straight, look at the target, pass in front of the target and follow through with the hands.
- Attack the defender and pass hard to target so the defender has less chance to follow the pass.
What you get your players to do
Put three attackers opposite three players and behind three coned gates about 5m apart. Get them to run forward with the first attacker taking and giving a pass after he goes through the gate in front of him. The receiver goes through the next gate and passes to the last attacker (see picture 1).
The first attacker runs through the middle gate and turns to run back through the gate the third attacker first ran through. He turns to defend. The other two attackers go through their far gates and then run back down for a 2v1 (see picture 2).
Once complete, another group of three attackers go from the other end. Make sure the attackers keep swapping roles.
The attackers moving through their gates, with the first pass being taken and given before the middle gates and the second pass after the middle gates.
Development
Make all the passes before the players reach the middle gates but play the 2v1 in the same way.
Get a defender to pressurise the first attacker (he starts at the middle gate).
Get the second and third attacker to use a switch pass before turning to attack in the 2v1.
The first attacker runs through his middle gate and back round through the third attacker’s first gate. He then defends a 2v1 with the other attackers turning after reaching the far end. Once complete, the three players at the other end run the moves after being fed an initial pass from the side.
Game situation
In a 20m x 15m box, set up three attackers facing away from two defenders. Get the defenders to start at one of three distances away from the attack (A, B or C), lined up inside the first two attackers with a feeder to the side (see picture 3).
Get the attackers to run back 5m.
Release the defence at any time and the attack has to score at the far end of the box, without the ball carrier being two-hand touched.
Where the three attackers run to the line in front of them and turn to attack the two defenders who start at either A, B or C. Release the defence at any time. The attack aims to score at the far end without the ball carrier being two-hand touched.
What to call out
- “Run straight, hands towards the ball”
- “Keep the ball above the hips when you are carrying it”
