Play this attack-scanning game where the attacking team look for spaces between and behind the defence to score tries.
The whole group need to scan, not just the ball carrier. They should give verbal signals on which play to use to score tries.
A 40m long, 20m wide box, with cones to mark out scoring zones, and a ball.
Put four attackers in one half of the pitch and three defenders in the other half, with another defender in the scoring zone.
The attackers have three attempts. The defenders cannot move out of their zones, so the attackers can enter and leave the zone without using up an attempt.
An attempt is over if the attacking team infringe, score a try or get touched in possession of the ball.
The attackers can run and pass as normal, or kick. The receiver of a kick doesn’t need to be behind the kicker, but the kick must be made inside the defensive zone
Once an attempt is over, the attacking team reset for another go, whilst the defence swap around roles.
If a kick goes into the scoring zone, an attacker can score even if they are touched, as long as they take a clean catch.
The kick receiver doesn’t have to be onside when the ball is kicked, but cannot go into the scoring zone until the ball is kicked. Remove this rule as the players develop.
Pass quickly and run onto the pass if in space.
Call from the outside if there’s space.
