Use this to work the ball up the touchline - without ever going into touch - to allow your team to open up the field and attack wide later.
Strong progress up the 5m channel ties in defenders and then leaves the width of the field to attack.
A 15m box with a 7m channel inside; ruck pads; balls; a 20m box with a 5m channel for the game.
ACTIVITY: Three attackers start at one end of the box with a ball. Put one ruck pad-holder 5m away on the central line and two 10m away. Make the player on the central line pass to the player nearest the touchline. Once made, the first pad-holder moves forward and tries to knock the ball or ball carrier into touch. If the attack gets past the first ruck pad-holder, the next two move forward with the same aim.
DEVELOPMENT: Put one defender 3m in front of the attack and two on the same line as the attackers but in the other channel. Get the inside attacker to pass the ball. The first defender moves forward. The defenders at the side each run to a cone on the middle line before joining in.
GAME SITUATION: Set up six attackers and four defenders, as per the third illustration. The attack runs forward and creates a ruck. Let play develop. The attack gets five points if it can score in the 5m channel at the side, and one point otherwise.
