This easily set-up game creates enough chaos to make players think about their catch-and-pass skills under the sort of pressure they might face in a real match.
Getting players used to using ‘soft hands’ will result in more catches and greater continuity.
A 20m x 10m box; a ball; nine cones (four blue, four red, one white); six players. The first illustration shows how to set up the cones.
ACTIVITY: You call out either “Blue” or “Red”, which indicates the defending group. White always attacks. The defenders touch their coloured cones, while the attackers run to the opposite line (see middle illustration). The defenders turn and defend against the inside players, leaving only the widest attacker free. The scrum-half passes after both defenders have touched their cone. Both defenders advance together.
DEVELOPMENTS: Develop by allowing defenders to defend against any player, so the attack has to decide on the choice and time of pass.
You call either “Red” or “Blue” and those corresponding players run to touch those cones
