Develop players’ basic passing and realignment skills before unleashing them on a defender, as they use either evasion or a pass to score. By DAN COTTRELL.
Work on pull-back passing, then beating a defender with a sidestep or pass.
A 6m square and a ball.
ACTIVITY: Three attackers start at one end of the square, with a defender facing away from them at the other end. The first attacker moves forward and passes back to the next one once they have gone 2m. The receiver repeats until the ball reaches the last player. In the meantime, the passers return to their starting points and the ball is passed back the other way. At any point, shout “Go!”. When that happens, the defender turns and runs forward. The attackers aim to beat the defender, either with footwork or passing, before they are touched. See the bottom illustration for details on point scoring.
DEVELOPMENT: Add another defender. Change the dimensions of the box to increase the length of passes.
At any point, you shout “Go!”. The ball carrier advances, supported by the other two players
The attack gets 2 points if they score a try which includes a pass
