Develop the full skill of taking a pass, adjusting the ball and stride before making a long kick up field, either to touch or infield. Work this skill under pressure and in a game.
Whatever the style of kick your kickers prefer (drop punt or spiral), they will have take a pass first before kicking.
Between the 5m and 15m lines on the side of a normal pitch. A 40m wide, 50m long pitch for the game. Balls.
EXERCISE
Put a kicker inside the 5m and 15m lines. Have a feeder pass the ball to the kicker who has to kick it so it will land inside the two lines. Have a player at the far end to gather the kick and return the ball.
Rotate kickers and feeders, and work on the ball coming from both the left and right sides.
DEVELOPMENT
Put in a player who chases the ball from the feed to pressurize the kicker. Start them from different angles.
Set the kicker specific distances to reach to see if they are increasing their range.
GAME
Play a game of touch rugby, at least 6 v 6 on a large pitch. The middle section of the pitch is a no kicking zone, but the team can kick in their own section of the pitch closest to their try line.
However, they will concede a try if the kick does not land in the opposition kicking zone or does not go out by the side-line of the opposition kicking zone.
Take the pass and get the ball to the middle of the body then check the target area.
Drop the ball onto the kicking foot and kick through to the target without looking up.
