In contact situations, players must react accurately to verbal commands from team-mates. Use this during a warm-up for ball placement.
Decision-making includes understanding where the support players are and what they can do to help. Responding to commands is part of this process.
A 5m box and a ball per two players. Set up lots of boxes.
One player holds the ball as the other faces them with their hands on their shoulders. When you shout “Go!”, the ball carrier attempts to go to ground with the ball while the other player tries to steal. After about two seconds, shout a number between 1 and 4. The ball carrier must get to the ground, if they haven’t already, and post the ball as if they were in a ruck towards the side of the square that has this number. The ball does not have to get to the line, only placed towards it. Give the ball carrier five seconds to achieve their target then stop the activity. Develop by putting two defenders against a ball carrier, then have a supporting player join in. They will shout the number and support from the correct angle.
