Using this activity will help players develop running angles and passing chains at pace, with scoring a try after three passes the aim.
Passing ‘chains’ rarely run in straight lines. A series of passes might have players attacking from different angles. They require different types of pass.
A 20m box, lots of cones and a ball.
ACTIVITY: Spread out at least six cones in one half of the box. A feeder starts about halfway up the side of the box. Three attackers begin on a corner at the end of the box where the cones are and on the same side as the feeder. The attackers then run into the box, each going around one of the cones. The nearest player to the feeder receives a pass. They then pass to another attacker, who passes to the last attacker, who runs over to the end of the box to score.
DEVELOPMENTS: Start with two attackers in one corner of the box, two attackers in the middle of one end and a feeder at the side. Two defenders start on the same edge of the box as the feeder, about 5m away, with another defender in the middle at the end. Shout “Go!” – the players come forward to attack and defend. Use scrag or touch tackling, with the aim that the attackers run and pass unhindered to the far line. Take out a defender if the players find it too difficult.
