The primary focus is on the support players and the lines they run. But also look for both the defenders and the attackers to get their heads up and look at the available options.
Use cones to mark out a 15m x 20m area. Decide which end will be the try line and use more cones to mark a line 5m in from it. Use seven players and a ball.
Activity: Place four attackers in single file at the opposite end of the area from the try line; and three defenders, also in single file, in the middle of the 5m line, facing away from the attackers. You stand outside the area; on your whistle, pass the ball to the lead attacker, who heads for the try line, flanked by the other attackers, who should spread out in support. As the attackers move forwards, the defenders must turn and defend against the attackers, trying to prevent them from going over for a try. Play two-handed touch rugby. Each game ends when either a try is scored, the defenders take possession, or the player in possession is tackled.
Development: Change the angles the attackers have to run by starting them from the left or right corner of the playing area, instead of the middle. Do the same for the defenders, by starting them from the left or right ends of the 5m line. Disorientate the attackers by making them start with their backs to the defenders, then turn before receiving the pass from you. Mix it up further by feeding the ball in from alternate sides.
