A maul must always be moving so that it does not become an easy target to stop.
A ball, two ruck pads, cones and a 24m wide, 15m long box.
ACTIVITY: A ball carrier has their back to two ruck pad-holders 1m away. Three other attackers face the ball carrier. Have the ball carrier turn and drive into the ruck pads. The other attackers come in to support and drive the ball carrier forward at least 5m. The attackers can choose whether to pull the ball to the back of the maul, keep the ball carrier with their back to the pads or have the ball carrier drive the ball on the hip. Another defender can be added to try to disrupt the ball.
DEVELOPMENT: Set up three attackers and two defenders, as in the middle picture. The attackers aim to drive the ball out of the defenders’ end of the box and then run free. If they move out of the side, lose the ball or go to ground then the attempt is over.
GAME SITUATION: Split the box into three columns, with five attackers in one half and three defenders in the other. The attackers have to carry the ball on their feet to the far end. The ball can only be handed to another player, not thrown.
Three attackers move forward inside the corridor
Put four attackers inside one of the corridors. They aim to score at the far end, staying inside that corridor. No passing is allowed
