Develop tacklers’ decision-making on whether they are the tackler, the assist or not involved, and whether they can assist at the right height.
Tests players’ response to bigger space between attack and defence from a lineout.
A 5m wide, 10m long box; a 15m box; then the side of a pitch; balls and three ruck pads.
EXERCISE
Put an attacker and defender 5m from the edge of the box, about 3m up the box. A feeder passes the ball to another attacker, who aims to get to the far end of the box. A defender comes forward to tackle them. Playing full contact, all the players get involved with the attacker, who is looking for a positive outcome: a try, an offload or a good ball placement.
DEVELOPMENT
A feeder passes from one of three cones. Two attackers and defenders support as if from the back of a lineout. A further two attackers aim to score at the far end of the box against two defenders. As above, play full contact.
GAME SITUATION
A forward carries a ball along the line of ruck pads on the ground. At a designated pad, they turn, jump and drop the ball down to a clearing passer. Two attackers and two defenders by the ruck pads support the 3v3 inside the box.
