This session will help players highlight their core skills under pressure. It works particularly on short passes, when the ball carrier is running ‘offline’.
‘Offline’ means the passer is either running towards the intended receiver, or away.
Cones, a ball and a 10m box split into quarters, with three balls.
ACTIVITY: An attacker starts about 5m away from two coned gates. They run forward and either go ‘short’ or ‘long’ through the gates, receiving a ball from a feeder at the side. They then pass to another attacker, who has to time their run to take the final pass at pace. At the same time, a defender comes forward to make sure the first receiver has a reason to pass.
GAME SITUATION: Two attackers start at one end of the first channel, with a defender in the middle of each channel. Have a feeder on the end of each channel. Two attackers are fed the ball and they aim to beat the defender in the middle. They can only come forward once the ball is fed. The defender can only ‘touch’ the ball carrier in possession to make a tackle. If a tackle is made, that pair has finished. If the pair make it to the end, they turn into the next channel, put the ball down and take a pass from the next feeder. Rotate after each pair has finished.
