Use this activity as a warm-up before more physical lifting exercises. It works on speed, footwork and efficiency for lineout-pod players.
Lifting is a two-player team skill and the ability to do it efficiently at speed is the key to great lineout defence and attack.
Four tackle tubes and a cone.
Activity 1: Pairs at each tube lift the tube vertically from the ground and place it after the lift is complete.
Activity 2: After each lift, pairs should touch the cone and return to their tube for another lift. Which pair can make the most lifts in one minute?
Game: Play ‘bumps’. Four players help keep the tubes upright until lifted. The other two pairs start at opposite corners of the square. Pairs lift and place a tube, and then move to the next tube in a clockwise direction, via the cone. The process is repeated at each tube. The winner is the pair that catches the opposition pair before they have started to lift, or the pair closest to the other after a set time, or number of laps.
Development: Replace the tubes with a jumper to be lifted at each corner. Race triples, consisting of a lifter and two jumpers who must perform a lifted jump at each corner.
Extend the legs, then arms.
Lower the tube to the ground after the lift.
Able, but injured, players can hold the tubes to maximise active player involvement.
