Defensive systems aren’t an excuse to avoid tackling. This session forces your defenders to step up and make a tackle in their channel.
Your team defence is only as strong as its weakest link. This session forces players to make tackles in front of their peers.
Cones, balls and a 30m box.
ACTIVITY:
Put three attackers and three defenders next to three channels. Have them run to face each other in the channels. As soon as the attackers are in position, a feeder passes to one of the attackers. They have to score in their channel while the defender has to tackle them. Give the attacker three seconds to score.
DEVELOPMENT:
Change sides, so the attackers and defenders are coming from a different angle. Make the channels wider. Have the defenders start from the corners of their channels, like a drift defence might.
GAME:
Split into equal teams of four- or five-a-side (no more). Each defender has a nominated attacker that the defender can tackle. The attacking team has three tackles in which to score. Infringements and using up the tackle count leads to a turnover. After a tackle, both players get to their feet and the attacker passes the ball away. An attacker can offload before their knees touch the ground.
Match up either opposite or inside your opposite player.
When they have the ball, close down the space quickly and bring them to ground.
