This warm-up game helps attackers and defenders weigh up options quickly. It is ideal for sevens training. By JAMIE BARNWELL, Cayman Islands 7s coach.
Players tend to learn decision-making in game situations, both real and simulated. In this fast-paced, adaptable warm-up game, players weigh up different defensive pictures and decide what option to take and when. Players are granted opportunities for self-discovery.
Use the area between the halfway line and the 10m lines, with the two 15m lines as touchlines. Put six attackers on each 10m line and five defenders on the halfway line.
The attack aims to score as many tries as possible in two minutes. The defence’s objective is to stay connected and defend the threats happening, as opposed to what they think is going to happen. Begin by feeding the ball to an attacking line, that aims to score on the halfway line. When a mistake or touch occurs (such as a dropped ball or forward pass), the passing team must immediately pass through to the other attacking team. The attacking team can only receive a pass across when they are standing behind their 10m line. The attack can also pass across at any time.
DEVELOPMENTS: Increase numbers of attackers or defenders. Increase width and size of pitch. Include score zones – for example, more points awarded if you score in the wider channels. Upon scoring, you can also pass back to your own team behind the 10m line.
The receiving attacking group must take the ball behind their starting line
When the new attacking group receives the ball, the defenders turn to defend
