Though most tackles are made from the front or side, some are rear tackles. Use this activity to help players develop their techniques to chase down ball carriers.
Very few rear tackles are from directly behind the ball carrier, most are from a slight angle that makes it easier for the tackler in making the tackle and more confident to do so.
Cones and a ball. A 20m box for exercise 2 and 3.
EXERCISE 1
Have the ball carrier run down a corridor and exit sharp right 2m from the end. As soon as the ball carrier turns, the defender steps into the box to make a tackle, or chase the ball carrier to make the tackle. The ball carrier only needs to run 5m out of the box.
Start the ball carrier jogging and then speed up the exercise as the players become more confident.
EXERCISE 2
Have a row of players run and pass a ball.
A defender starts about 2m behind the first player and aims to tackle either the third or fourth player before they reach the far end of the box.
EXERCISE 3
In the 20m box, play 3 v 2 touch rugby, but once a player has broken the first line, then it becomes full contact, with two extra defenders allowed to come in from the side.
Grab the ball carrier and then pull in tight and grip hard.
