Legally slow down opposition ball at the ruck by attacking the far side of the ruck.
Aim to get one defender over the tackle and the next defender take out the next attacker. They only go for the ball with their feet.
A 5m box and a 10m wide, 20m long box for the game.
ACTIVITY
Put a ball carrier and a defender in the middle of the box. Put another defender at the side of the box.
Have the ball carrier move from side to side, with the defender shadowing them.
When you shout “tackle”, the ball carrier takes a tackle and goes to the ground. The other defender has to get themselves over the ball as quickly as possible, legally and without putting their hands on the ball.
DEVELOPMENT
Put a ball carrier on the ground, with an attacking player two steps behind them.
Put a defender to the side. They have to come through the tackle gate and push the attacker over and away from the ball.
Note: The tackle gate is the width of the tackle on the ground. Players must enter with their hips facing up the field.
GAME
Play a game of 5 v 4 (plus one defender rotating in after every attempt). The attack has to keep recycling the ball within five seconds of the tackle – you make a slow count.
The defence win a point if they succeed in preventing release within 5 seconds, the attack for scoring a try.
