Use this game to develop good defensive line speed, with the aim of getting the ball carrier to ground quickly and regaining the ball.
Create dynamic scenarios for attackers and defenders to react to in and around the tackle area.
Cones and balls, and a 5m box (depending on players’ age).
Activity: Three players, one with a ball, start at one end of the box, with a further three players at the other end. Both groups come forward. The ball carrier pops the ball to a player in the group coming towards them. The groups cross over, get to the end of their box, turn and play. Playing full contact, the ball carrying team aims to get over the try line. The defending team aims to stop the attack with the following degrees of success:
Reset, swapping attack and defence. If there’s more than six per group, rotate players at the end of each attack and defence set.
Two groups of three run across the box
The defending group passes the ball to the attacking group just before they cross over
Both groups turn at the end of the box
The ball carrier’s team aims to score at the line in front of them
The defending team aims to chop down the ball carrier and then target the ball
