Work different types of tackle in a short space of time and with little recovery. This finishes with a game on defensive decision-making.
Reinforces basics of tackling and puts them into a game context. Work players in bursts so they’re tackling intensely for a short period but have enough recovery time to work hard.
Cones and balls plus two boxes for the game.
ACTIVITY: Put three ball carriers into the area. A tackler moves forward to make a side-on tackle. The ball carrier being tackled runs from one gate to the other without deviating. Once the tackle is made, the tackler recovers, moves around to make a front-on tackle before making a rear tackle. The ball carrier only moves towards the gate when the tackler is in place.
DEVELOPMENT: Put four defenders in the middle box and five attackers at the other end of the two big boxes. Shout “Go!” - any number of attackers run into each box with a ball. The defenders have to stop them getting to the other end - so it could be 4v3 and 1v1, or 3v2 and 2v2. Allow offloads but not rucks, mauls or kicking. The attack aims to score at least one try. Defenders can interchange at any time between the boxes; attackers can’t.
1. The tackler starts with a side-on tackle
2. The ball carriers must run/jog to the end of cones
3. They then move onto a front-tackle
4. Finally, the tackler runs to make a rear tackle
1. Put four defenders in the middle box
2. Release the attackers, who run into both boxes. The defenders have to choose quickly how many tacklers to put into each box
3. Allow offloads, but no rucks or mauls. Defenders can interchange between the boxes, but not the attackers
