Playing what is in front of you is a tough skill, even for very experienced players. But that does not mean it should not be practised at all levels of the game.
Challenges the players to pass, support and communicate quickly.
A 20m wide, 10m long box, two ruck pads and a ball, plus a 30m box for the game.
ACTIVITY: Spread out three sets of two coloured cones, as per the top illustration. Put two defenders at the side of the box and three attackers at the other end, either in the box or on the end. Have a feeder on the same edge as the defenders. The attackers have their back to the cones. Hold up a coloured cone - the defenders have to run into the box and round one of those cones before moving towards the attackers. At any stage, release the attackers who have to turn and attack to score at the far end. Adjust the starting distances to suit the skills of the players.
DEVELOPMENT: In the same box, start two defenders about 5m away from one end where four attackers are waiting. Hold up a cone - the defenders have to run back and touch that cone and then turn to face the attack. Release the attack at any point to aim to score at the other end.
Call “Turn!” at any stage and the attackers receive the ball
The defenders, who start facing you, run back to the cones you indicate before turning to defend
