Improve the speed of tackler’s recovery time to get them ready to win the tackle ball. They must know the game’s laws to not put their hands beyond the ball.
Once the tackle is made, if the tackler can get to their feet quickly and spin into position over the ball, they have a good chance of disrupting or winning the tackle ball.
A ruck pad and ball.
EXERCISE: Put the tackler on their front in different positions around the ruck pad. When you shout “Go!”, the tackler gets to their feet to go for the ball. As long as the ruck pad is not over the ball and in contact with the tackler, they can put their hands on the ball.
DEVELOPMENT 1: The players must have an arm and/or shoulder on the ruck pad. Once they get up, they must clearly stop touching the pad before going in for the ball.
DEVELOPMENT 2: Put a ball carrier just in front of the tackler and a ruck pad-holder behind the ball carrier. The tackler circles the ball carrier as the ball carrier walks forward. When you shout “Go!”, the tackler makes a tackle, recovering their feet to go for the ball. Release the ruck pad-holder at any stage.
