This low-impact activity works on the defender getting to the tackle as they attempt to intercept the ball carrier, who is making a sprint for the line.
Getting to the tackle can be as important as making it. Because this session mainly works on chasing tackles, it is quite low impact.
A 10m x 8m box, cones and one ball per attacker.
ACTIVITY: Set up a 2m coned gate in the middle of the box for the attacker to run into, and 2m coned gates for defenders A and B to run from. Call a letter to indicate which defender will attempt to intercept the attacker before they reach the try line. The attacker can only angle their run after they go through the gate. Defenders can only touch after that point, as well. Depending on the speed of your defenders, you can start them further along the side of the box.
DEVELOPMENT: Make the tackle a grab and then a full tackle. Develop by having defenders A and B working together; the defender not nominated runs around the end of the box to come into defend. Another attacker can act as a support runner and take a pass before or after a touch/tackle to score.
The defender can only touch tackle once the attacker has gone through their gate
