Develop your forwards with this full session which explores set-piece techniques.
Prepare from scrums and lineouts.
Cones, ruck pads and a 15m wide, 20m long box.
SCRUM
Ask an upright player to go into a scrum position, so their heels are just off the ground. Then ask them to stand upright again, before repeating.
Make a player fall forward from a scrummage position onto his hands. They then have to bounce back up and into the scrum position once again.
Make a player step one pace backwards from a scrum position to take up the same body shape.
LINEOUT
Put three players in a triangle 5m apart sitting on ruck pads. They throw a ball overhead to each other. This replicates a throw, catch and turn process. Make sure the catcher extends himself fully if they can. Swap the direction.
Put a jumper between two cones 5m apart. Have a thrower 5m away from each cone and a receiver to the side. Have one thrower throw the ball into the jumper, who jumps, catches and passes to the receiver. The receiver then passes to the other thrower. The jumper, in the meantime, turns and runs to take the ball from the next thrower.
GAME
Play a 5 v 5 game. Play touch rugby. If a player is touched, they turn and pass the ball.
After three touches, there is a 3 v 3 scrum to the opposition. It is uncontested, but if either team shows poor technique, there is a penalty to the other team.
If the ball goes out of play, there is a 2 v 2 contested lineout, with the other players back 5m. The winner of the lineout can pass away without being touched.
