With strong goal-line defence comes the need for absolute clarity in the system, particularly the role of the tackler and tackle assist.
Helps players understand the role of the tackler and the tackle assist in a close-quarter situation.
Use cones to represent the breakdown/ruck.
ACTIVITY: The ball carrier, set at the back of the ruck, lifts the ball. They then come around the corner of the ruck, where the tackler will make a low tackle that stops momentum.
DEVELOPMENT: Add another defender next to the tackler, and another attacker. When the ball carrier comes around the corner, the tackler will again make a low tackle that stops momentum. The second defender/tackle assist will either help finish the tackle or get under the ball carrier and wrap or rip the ball, while the other attacker aims to drive them away.
GAME SITUATION: Set up three breakdown shapes across the goal line, with two attackers and two defenders. The attackers attack one side of the first breakdown. Once a phase is played, they get around to the next breakdown, play a phase, and so on.
